The Importance of Fermentation

We're hearing more and more about our

microbiome and how important it is keeping us healthy mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The depletion of our microbiome is not only due to exposure to chemicals and pharmaceuticals but also reflects the depletion of our soils.

This is why I love the soil-based probiotics made by Microbz, a family-run farm based in Salisbury, UK.

The Process

Every once in a while, we take our ingredients down to the edge of the forest where we dig a hole and place them inside. We leave that for a while and then, when the time is right, dig it up. When we pull it up it has a certain smell (like good earth) and in certain lights it looks like a rainbow.

From there we undertake four steps of fermentation. We don’t rush. We do each process with care and consideration, keeping it warm and monitoring it regularly. In the last fermentation stage, we add in traditional herbs and minerals to make each product. Camomile goes into sleep and shepherd’s purse into women’s; slippery elm goes into revive and artichoke into detox.

These herbs do two jobs: they feed the microbes, giving them what they need to flourish, and they lend their wisdom to the body, guiding it in areas like hormones, digestion, or detoxification. Each is chosen with care and sourced organically where we can.

The treasure of balance

When fermentation is complete, we test it for safety. In over 20 years of making probiotics from soil, we've never seen a pathogenic overgrowth. What we do see again and again are the same families of 15 microbes that make up our living formulas.

For me this highlights one of the treasures of working with microbes: finding balance. Beneficial microbes support the body to come back to balance.

Why does fermentation matter

It makes nutrients more bioavailable, strengthens the gut, and calms inflammation. But beyond the science, it's playful, alive, alchemical, a reminder that life is transformational, when given time and space.
