Many of us are aware of the harmful impact of chlorine in our drinking water but we absorb far more if we shower or bathe in mains tap water.

At least we can leave tap water to stand until some chlorine's dispersed, whereas in a bath or shower we're breathing it in directly - absorbing it into our lungs and warm open pores.

Chlorine's important because it kills bacteria: waterborne pathogens which could make us very sick – but it also kills good bacteria.

When we shower or bathe in an enclosed environment, we inhale chloroform – a byproduct of chlorine – which can wreak havoc on our intestinal flora, wiping out colonies of beneficial microbes.

Studies show that taking a ten minute shower in warm water – which opens pores – can result in a greater chloroform intake than if you drank eight glasses of chlorinated water.

Many people mistakenly view their skin as a barrier against contamination, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
