Living at 70%
I recently had a wonderful week off doing Qi Gong 3 hours a day and it reminded me that Qi Gong masters say. 'Do Qi Gong at 70% of your capacity'.
I find this philosophy very helpful in a world where we're praised for 'going the extra mile' or ''no pain, no gain'.
In the same way you're asked not to fully extend your limbs in QI Gong because your joints lock, so it is in life. A locked joint loses its shock-absorbing quality; it's rigid and more likely to be injured. Likewise an overextended life has no slack, no buffer - no room to flex to meet the unexpected. No wonder in an 'urgency culture' we get sick, overwhelmed and burn out.
So consider living your life at 70%. Fill up only 70% of your time, expend only 70% of your energy and you'll have the spaciousness and capacity to meet the new with resilience and even enthusiasm. Not only that, but when the universe knocks on your door with exciting opportunities or serendipitous support, instead of telling to come back later you have the time and space to invite them in.

Bach to Basics - Stop Striving, Start Living |
|
Are you intensely focused? Highly motivated? Incensed by injustice? Is it hard to relax and pace yourself? Do you always go the extra mile - and then some?
When we're first aware of our calling in life it can be tremendously exciting. How we use that enthusiasm depends on how far we've understood our physical needs, our requirements for spiritual connection and our emotional maturity.
If we've yet to become skilled at co-creating with the universe and instead rely upon our own willpower, our enthusiasm can become unbalanced. We may waste our resources trying to convert others to our ideas, talking too much and not allowing space to listen. With the best of intentions we can overwhelm and micro-manage instead of empower others, trying to do it for them instead of allowing them to learn.
This imbalance scatters and consumes our energy when we'd do better to focus it on embodying the ideas we believe in, which will make us a magnet for those eager to receive what we have to offer. Instead of using up all our energy and being in constant overdrive we can keep something in reserve, change down a gear, giving ourselves more control and more room for manoeuvre. We're better able to adapt to changing situations and be more present to the journey, which makes it more relaxing and far more enjoyable..

Spiral Dynamics & the Enneagram - Sat 5 Nov |
|
The Enneagram is an ancient system of understanding our personality patterns based on nine types of childhood conditioning that cause us to lose connection with our spiritual essence. It's a powerful and interesting way to understand yourself and your reactions.
It's used within Sufism and many branches of Christianity as a way of encouraging spiritual growth.I often use it in coaching as it raises awareness and can help you see if certain behaviours mean you're moving towards negative self-sabotaging tendencies or towards health and greater wholeness.
To give you an extremely simplified taste - see which type you resonate with:
Type 1 has often grown up in a very critical environment and tends towards perfectionism. They need to be seen as good and responsible to be loveable.
Type 2 has been praised for being helpful and supportive so they see their value in what they can give. They suppress their own needs to look after others.
Type 3 gained approval by achieving, so they find self-worth by being materially successful according to the values of society, rather than their own soul's direction.
Type 4 often experienced loss in childhood which they blame themselves for, so they need to prove themselves worthy of love. They retreat into imagination and creativity.
Type 5 dealt with early neglect by withdrawing into their intellect and becoming solitary and self-sufficient. They approach the world 'rationally' using information and knowledge.
Type 6 felt unsafe as a child and became hyper-vigilant. They may be anxious and cautious or the opposite; constantly confronting danger in their work or extreme sports.
Type 7 a difficult childhood event made a 7 want to avoid facing fear, conflict or difficult situations. They deny negativity, frame everything positively and pursue pleasure and fun.
Type 8 usually suffered childhood trauma, often involving abandonment and betrayal, and decided the world is unsafe, so they must never be weak or vulnerable. They armoured up and focus on being powerful and defensive to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
Type 9 is very empathic. They ignored their own needs as children in order to keep the peace and soothe others. They use routines such as TV, food, drink, sex and sleep to numb themselves. They prioritise the needs of others over their own - which they're often unaware of.
Spiral Dynamics examines the evolution of consciousness over the last 100,000 years - so you can learn the core codes that determine your values, motivations, and aspirations.
