I once attended a talk by inspirational author and coach Nick Williams when I knew he was going through a tough time personally. I asked him how he found the motivation to show up. He replied that he made what he had to share more important than how he felt at the time. Those words remain with me whenever I write this newsletter.
Sometimes it's easy but sometimes I have to dig deep. Somehow for twelve years, twice a month that discipline has seen me through - and provided I show up and lean into the support of spirit there's always something to share that I trust will awaken, comfort or inspire someone somewhere.
The boxer Mohammed Ali was one of the greatest examples of someone with vision and the discipline to accomplish it. He stood up for his beliefs in civil rights and equality regardless of the consequences and was banned from boxing for three years for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war. He used his skill and his fame in service to others and to give the oppressed a voice.
Biting back what needs to be said, not having the courage to ring the bell, make the call, send the email, click 'submit' or face conflict - all these things make us contract. Not only at a physical level, where our clenched jaw can bring on headaches, migraine and a tight neck and shoulders, but also at a soul level where it erodes our self-confidence and self-esteem.
